Preparing your sprinkler system for winter.

Here in Houston, Texas we have mild winters compared to rest of the country. We do not have a frost line therefore, our soil never freezes. There water in the sprinkler lines under ground are safe during winter. The only part of the sprinkler system that is exposed to freezing is the FEBCO Vacuum Pressure Breaker (Figure 1A).

The FEBCO Vacuum Pressure Breaker needs to be drained before it freezes. First turn off the water to the sprinkler system. A good sprinkler system installer will place a valve in the ground around your water meter or underneath this FEBCO Vacuum Pressure Breaker. Then turn on any zone with your controller and this will drain everything down stream from the brass FEBCO Vacuum Pressure Breaker.
